It was with great sadness we learned of the passing of Paddy Gilligan, the uncle of Mr. Gilligan, our principal. Paddy was a very good friend of Lumcloon National School and was its unpaid caretaker for many years. He watched the school being built from his house across the road and was always ready to help the teachers and pupils in the school when problems arose.
His kindness and generosity to us was unparalleled, he even offered the use of a bedroom in his house as a classroom in 1992 when Lumcloon National School went from a two to three teacher school. This offers was gratefully accepted and Paddy refused to accept any form of payment for the use of his home.
We will miss Paddy’s kind smile and wonderful welcome whenever we visited his farm.
